White Chia Seeds vs Black Chia Seeds

'What's the difference between black and white seed?' This is the most common question we are asked.

The answer is simple. The ‘black' variety of Chia naturally contains a combination of black, grey and white seeds. The ‘white' Chia variety was formed by specially selecting white seeds from the black variety. The growers use dedicated paddocks of black and white seed.

Aside from the obvious colour difference, the seed itself is virtually the same in all of its properties - size, taste and smell, with the exception of a few minor seasonal nutritional differences.

Variety is the spice of life! For the best of both of worlds we suggest you incorporate a combination of both black and white Chia Seeds.

Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds and Essential Fatty Acids

Chia seeds contain 32 to 39 percent oil, and this oil has the highest natural percentage of alpha-linolenic acid or omega 3 – up to 64 percent.    The oil also contains omega 6 essential fatty acids, and has an omega 3 to omega 6 ratio of 3:1.  Chia seeds are also rich in long-chain triglycerides which help to maintain the proper wall flexibility of the cells and also restore the correct cholesterol to triglycerides ratio.  The omega 3 found in chia seeds is converted by the body into DHA and EPA fatty acids – the same kinds that are found in fish oil.

Essential fatty acids are vital in the body, helping muscles to recover after exercise or other physical exertion.  They also help to increase the metabolism, thus helping in fat burning and weight loss.  Essential fatty acids also play a part in generating the electrical currents that make the heart beat correctly.  As well, they govern food absorption, mental health, and the process of oxidation and growth.

Chia Seeds and Nutrients

As well as essential fatty acids, chia seeds contain up to 23 percent protein.  This protein is a complete protein and can be very effectively utilised by the body.  Chia Seeds are also gluten free.  Chia seeds are also rich in B vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, boron, and copper.  In actual fact, chia seeds contain five times more calcium than milk does by weight, and the calcium in chia seeds is more easily absorbable by the body than the calcium in milk is.  Chia seeds have three times more iron than spinach, and fifteen times more magnesium than broccoli.

Chia Seeds and Antioxidants

Chia seeds are also rich in antioxidants, especially chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and flavanol glycosides.  Chia seeds also contain myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonols that protect the fatty acids from oxidation.  These natural antioxidants mean that the chia seeds do not require refrigeration or added natural antioxidants to remain fresh.

Chia Seeds, Energy, and their Effect on the Colon

Chia seeds are able to absorb over nine times their weight in water and actually form a gel.  This gel causes carbohydrates to be released slowly into the body, and the carbohydrates are slowly converted into glucose which is then used for energy.  This keeps the body feeling fuller for longer.  Chia seeds are also rich in soluble fibre (five percent).  The mucilaginous properties of chia seeds act as both a bulking agent and a fibre source, and this helps to cleanse and soothe the colon.  Chia seeds are able to act as a sort of sponge, absorbing toxins, whilst also lubricating the colon, and strengthening the peristaltic action of the intestines.

How much Chia do I need?
Approx 15g of Chia Seeds (1 tablespoon) once or twice a day

How to prepare your Chia Seeds
The most convenient way to prepare Chia Seeds is to firstly make a Chia Seed Gel mixture, which you then drink or use to mix with your favorite beverage or food.
You can prepare one serve at a time or a larger serve to last a few days.

If you prefer to only make 1 serve of Chia Seeds, then add 1 tablespoon of Chia Seeds into a DRY glass, then pour water and stir immediately, then follow Step 4 as listed below.

For a larger serve, we recommend that you prepare the Chia Seed Gel in a jug that has an air tight seal, that way you can store the gel mixture in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
The following instructions relate to using a 2 Litre jug.

  1. Ensure the jug is completely dry before commencing.
  2. Add between 8 – 12 tablespoons of Chia Seeds into the dry 2 Litre jug. (8 tablespoons for first time users, after approx 2 weeks increase to 10 – 12 tablespoons
  3. Pour water (filtered or spring water preferred) and begin stirring the mixture immediately until the jug is full. This will avoid the seeds from “clumping” and sticking together
  4. Keep stirring the mixture for approx 30 – 40 seconds, let the Chia Seed mixture stand for about 1 minute then stir again. The Chia Seeds will begin forming a gel mixture within a couple of minutes; stir a few more times over the next 10 minutes. The Chia Seed gel mixture is now ready.
  5. Pour the Chia Seed Gel into a glass (approx 2/3 of a glass) then top up with your favorite juice (or drink it straight).

The Chia Seed mixture on its own does not have much of a taste; just a gel type texture and will absorb the flavour of what ever you mix with it.

The Chia Seed Gel can be added to your favorite smoothie or shake. Add Chia Seed Gel to cereal, salad dressing, soups, vegetable dishes, casseroles, yogurt, fruit salads and any food or beverage that you like.

If you prefer to only make 1 serve of the Chia Seeds on its own, then add 1 tablespoon of Chia Seeds into a DRY glass, then pour water and stir immediately, then follow Step 4 as listed above

Dry Chia Seeds can also be used in cereal, porridge, salads, soups, baked breads and cakes or any other way you would add dry seeds to a recipe.

  1. Won't start the day with out them

Posted by Atila on 25th Jan 2010

I have a strange diet. No red meat, no dairy and not much of anything. I am an athlete, very active and have a busy and stressful workload. I was introduced to these by a friend (Jungle: a natural remedy psychopath) about 4 months ago. It took about a week or two before noticing something. I went off them threw laziness and noticed a loss of energy and well being (like before I was introduced). Now I can't start the day with out a glass of this precious substance. My 13 year old son started it 4 weeks ago and noticed something too. Try it and judge for your self.

  2. Put an end to constipation & bloating

Posted by Jan on 8th Jan 2010

I've struggled with constipation for over 40 years. Now I'm regular & healthier. No more bloating or abdominal pain. Constipation has so many side effects and the increased energy level I have is amazing. I have a family member who also contributes the daily consumption of chia seeds in assisting his massive (& life saving) weight loss. Chia is another brilliant gem from Mother Nature.

  3. I've noticed a difference

Posted by kool on 2nd Jan 2010

I have bought a little packet of these at the markets a week ago. I can honestly say that I dont feel bloated anymore. I have increased energy and can go to the bathroom easier. I suffer from psioris and have also noticed that I'm not scratching as much as before. You must try this - at least a weeks worth and then judge for yourself!
